Have you ever noticed that people only get the dreaded flu in the winter? Have you ever asked why? Have you wondered if there is an effective alternative to the controversial (IMHO, cure-is-worse-than-the-cause) flu shot?
I’m always on the lookout for safe, effective, preventative measures against sickness and disease because I believe that God provided them for us if we can locate them. In the past, I swore by Zinc nasal gel for warding off colds and viruses of all types (although it was not effective against the flu), and to this day I still believe it worked great for me for several years. But a couple years ago, I basically quit using Zinc, because I discovered something even better!
It all started on a flight from Albuquerque to Denver where I happened to sit next to a physician from Canada. She was very interesting and stressed preventative medicine in her practice. I asked her what could be done about “winter blues,” because it was very debilitating for me every year. She insisted that taking 4,000 IUs of Vitamin D (vitamin of the sun) during the winter months would essentially cure winter blues, and that almost all physicians in Canada recommended every Canadian take Vitamin D. In fact, she said that anyone living north of the southern border of Colorado needed this vitamin for lack of sunlight.
Fast forward two years. My husband and I have been faithfully taking 4,000 IUs during the winter and 2,000 IUs during the summer ever since. Winter blues are gone. But wait, there’s more! Last year I discovered that UCLA did a study on Vitamin D and concluded that it was effective in warding off influenza as well as many other viruses and illnesses. This year, I began to learn about how it is effective in fighting cancer, especially in women. And wouldn’t you know, I haven’t been sick since beginning to take it, despite traveling a lot and the fact that I now work in a hospital. A couple times I felt some mild symptoms as if I was trying to come down with something, but it never materialized. And last winter I even took care of one of my friends who came down with H1N1, but I didn’t catch it.
I am excited to share this with you because I really believe I am onto something. What is particularly noteworthy to me is that nobody has anything to gain from recommending a dirt cheap vitamin (as in, ulterior motives by greedy pharmaceuticals). All kinds of studies are coming out now about the amazing power of this accessible little wonder vitamin. Vitamin D is manufactured in our bodies from the sun’s rays, and brings healing. And it all got me thinking. A few weeks ago I posted a blog about Jesus being compared to the sun. I was reminded of Malachi 4:2:
“But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in His wings; and you will go forth and skip about like calves from the stall.”
Jesus, who is compared to the glory of the Sun throughout Scriptures is…
- The Source of all light
- Sustainer and producer of life
- Our healer and our health
No, Jesus is not a vitamin…but He always leaves these inspiring little hints in nature that correspond to spiritual truths. It looks like He made a way for us to bottle up some of that sun in the natural world so we could find healing and wholeness all the year through. In the same way, He bottled up some of Himself in His Word, so that our spirits could find spiritual wholeness and healing by taking in daily doses throughout the year. What a cool parallel!
