Rocks are truly awesome and have always fascinated me. I mean, at first glance, there’s nothing special about most rocks. But have you ever taken the time to really look at them? They are a spectacular display of creation!
Rocks come in all shapes and sizes. I positively love our nearby mountains where you can spot rocks as big as houses, along with giant boulder fields that look as if they were liberally sprinkled out of a shaker onto the landscape.
Rocks as big as houses are captivating!
Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been collecting rocks. My rock collection had grown so big that my husband began pleading after our 4th move, “Can you please get rid of some of these rocks before we move again?” Well, I did get rid of a whole big box of rocks (other rock lovers descended on the box at our garage sale happily offering to buy them), but unfortunately that same year we spent a lot of time in the mountains and, once again, I found a whole new rock collection to replace the old one :D.
I know you’re wondering what kind of rocks I could possibly collect, besides the ones the size of houses. As a kid I did a lot of arrowhead hunting and collected some of those. And then there was agate. I LOVE agate, especially moss agate. Obsidian. Geodes—opening a geode is like opening a present. You never know how spectacular the crystals are going to be inside. Specially shaped rocks. I don’t know, any rocks will do—they all fascinate me!

My husband reminded me recently of something really amazing that I learned in chemistry class in high school. Rocks are actually just a bunch of moving atoms. The Kinetic Theory states that all matter (rocks included) is made up of moving molecules or atoms. In solids, the atoms are so tightly bound to each another that they can only vibrate but not move to another location.
This made me think about my amazing God and creator. Colossians 1:17 says,
“He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
This is in keeping with ancient Jewish teachings that say God fills all of His creation—there is nothing that is outside of God. We are not God, but we are all a part of God and God fills everything He has made. If that is true, it totally makes sense to me why rocks would having living, moving energy.
Maybe one other reason that I am so drawn to rocks is that Jesus was often called The Rock. Paul even teaches that the Manna that fell from heaven AND the Rock that “followed” the Israelites in the wilderness, providing their food and “living water,” were both Jesus.
“…and all ate the same spiritual food; and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.” 1 Cor. 10:3-4
Now whether they were truly Jesus or a picture of Him, it doesn’t matter much to me. It’s still freakin’ amazing! Yep, I love rocks, especially The Rock. In closing, check out a super cool video about rocks that sneak and skate freestyle when nobody is watching…
