I wrote my first masterpiece when I was 6 years old: a poem, carefully transcribed onto lined handwriting paper. None of the teachers could believe a first grader could write such powerful words. I memorized the entire thing, and I still remember it today. I’m honored to share it with you.

I have a ball.
The ball rolled down the hall.
It bumped into the wall.
The End (visualize curtsy here)

Of course, I know now that it wasn’t a masterpiece, but it was at that moment that I fell in love. I fell in love with words. By the time I was in college, I knew I was going to write a book someday.

The next thing I knew, I was 40 and had never written anything. So I sat down, wrote a book, got 63 rejections, and the book dashed to publication in a mere 10 years!

So now I teach at writer’s conferences across the country and right here at my writing home…just so you don’t have to make the same mistakes I did.
