The Road to Christian Writing Success

2011ncompasswritingretreatEdie Melson and I just returned from leading the NCompass Writing Retreat, our 9th four-day get-away for writers. As always, it was a time of refreshing, refueling, and, of course, rewriting.

But this year the focus was on another re: releasing.

No matter where we are on this writing journey, we tend to compare. We compare our words to other writers and determine our worth. We compare their publications to our rejections. We long for their successes and see ourselves as failures.

I Spy the Truth

littlegirlwithmagnifyingglassistock811Several years ago, my granddaughter, Ellie, and I were passing the time on a family road trip by playing one of our favorite travel games, I Spy. It was Ellie’s turn and she had me searching high and low for something purple, our favorite color. It wasn’t the beach towel, the flower on her shirt, or her purple nail polish. Opportunities Week for You!

malicecreamWhat a blessed week I had in Atlanta at the Advanced Writers and Speakers Association Conference and the International Christian Retailers Show. It’s now the 3rd Tuesday of the month, and as you know, that usually means a writing instruction piece and writing and conference opportunities.

However, my 7yo granddaughter, Mallory, is here now and I need to concentrate on eating ice cream, going to water parks and pottery and movies, and teaching her the fine art of latch-hook projects. Oh, and we’re writing a book together this week, too: Murphy the Brave.

Are You Damaged Goods?

depressiongirlchristianphotosI’ve learned a lot during my years of writing and speaking. And some things have surprised me. But nothing has surprised me more than this: we Christians have a hard time letting go of our guilt. Even if we’ve accepted God’s gift of grace and forgiveness, many of us still have a hard time believing He forgets our past. We still hear Satan’s condemnation as he whispers in our ears.
