One Radical Sacrifice

Some people are afraid to die for their faith, but I think living for your faith takes a lot more courage. Offering your life as a "living sacrifice" means that you have to die for your faith every day—die to selfish interests, die to dreams you have for yourself that aren't necessarily God's dreams for you, and die to sinful desires. Think about it, leaving this earth is a one-time event that happens to everyone and doesn't usually involve a choice. Living for God, on the other hand, requires the daily choice of putting the old selfish you to death.

Here are some great ways to get started:

  • Tell your friends and family about the gift of life through Jesus.

  • Serve your family with a good attitude.

  • Treat others with respect.

  • Accept trials with the attitude that they are an opportunity for others to see your hope and trust in God.

  • Think of ways to show kindness to people who treat you badly.

  • Say you're sorry when you mess up.

  • Most of all, get to know God by reading His Word and talking to Him often. That is where your strength for the daily sacrifice will come from.

Dying to yourself daily sounds hard but strangely, it actually makes you the happiest! I happent to know this well, because when I'm living for myself, I'm the most miserable. Jesus said that when you give up your life and become a living sacrifice, you will find true life. You will be an example to others, you will grow closer to God, and your life will be filled with real exciting purpose, joy, and amazing opportunities!

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will accept. When you think of what he has done for you, is this too much to ask? Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is. Romans 12:1-2
